Ok, so my family is planning to vacation in Hawaii for a month to a month and a half. Have any Opponaughts vacationed in Hawaii? If so, what Islands do you recommend?

Another vote for Maui. The beaches and snorkeling are great, though you've missed the whales.

I've been twice.
The Big Island is your typical, off the beaten path yet nice place. I rented a house on Kealakekua Bay. Absolutely great place.
Kauai was a great spot too. Stayed at the Princeville Resort in the Hanalei Bay area.
I think you're bullet proof with choosing any island. Maui is much more touristy, Kauai and the Big Island are less touristy but equally as nice, if not nicer. Ends up being your preference.

Don't go to Hawaii! Having been to almost every island in the caribbean (yay for living on the gulf of mexico) I can easily say that Grand Cayman is the best island destination!

Maui is great, and you can go check out the black sand beach. I also recommend the road to hana, while it is a long drive you see some cool shit (but it's on a like 1.5 car width road) so it gets a little hairy at times.
Oahu is pretty populated and not seemingly as tropical, though it is still nice for a resort type of area.
Those are the only 2 I've gone to.

I love Grand Cayman. My family used to own a timeshare when I was younger (pro tip: don't buy a timeshare). Unlike other Carribbean islands, you don't get heckled to buy crap.

I've been to Honolulu, Maui, and Kauai. Maui seemed like a good place for surfing, Kauai was Laid back, a lot of hiking trails and beautiful sights, and to tell the truth when I was in Honolulu I was working 12 hours a day, so all I saw was the job site, the condo I stayed in, and what was walking distance from those two, so I can't really say. I also spent three weeks working on Tortola in the British Virgin Isles. I love the Caribbean. I'd really love to explore that area more.

We honeymooned on a Hawaiian cruise so got a taste of all the islands. Kauai was very nice and some cool film related sight seeing. I liked the big island and we went up to visit the telescopes. Totally worth it!

I wasn't as into Maui but I haven't been to any other islands there. Maybe it's bestest.

I did Maui and Kauai for my honeymoon a couple years ago. Rent a convertible and do the Road to Hana and the sun rise on Mt. Haleaeakalieia-something. The Road to Hana will test the strength of your family, but it's worth the sights
